Google Personalized Homepage Drops Sidebar

Article Date: 2006-04-19 Google recently changed the way content gets added to its personalized homepage, making the "Add content" link bring you to the widget/module directory.
This basically fazed out the slide-out sidebar that had given the homepage a bit of Ajax cool, but also means it now does a better job showing off the wealth of options for personalizing the page.
I'm wondering if people prefer the way things are now, or if they miss the sidebar. Was this a change for the better?
